Born in 1918, Enrique Castelo was largely inspired by the 1930s growing up. on a global scale this period can be best characterised by the clash between the world’s dominant political philosophies - Marxist Socialism, Capitalist Democracy, and the Totalitarianism of both Communism and Fascism. The era assumed a sinister turn with the beginning of National Socialism in Germany, and Adolf Hitler’s rise to power in 1933. The decade would conclude in the inset on the Second World War; a political and social uproar that preoccupied not only artists, but large swathes of the global population.
