Presenting unexpected juxtapositions of forms, materials, and ideas, Dirk Stewen integrates his multiple mediums together into singular pieces to create arresting works of assemblage. Utilising aspects of photography, drawing, assemblage, collage, and embroidery, Stewen recombines his materials together to create poetic compositions that are evocative and interesting. His pieces provide the audience with an opportunity for new associations and narratives around familiar contexts.
Born in 1972 in Dortmund, Germany, Stewen attended the University of Fine Arts Hamburg after he graduated with a degree in art history from Ruhr University Bochum.
He was an artist-in-residence at the Villa Aurora in Los Angeles and the Chianti Foundation in Marfa, Texas. Over the last decade his work has been shown throughout Europe and the United States, in institutions such as the Kunsthaus Bregenz, Austria; Aspen Art Museum, Colorado; Weatherspoon Art Museum, The University of North Carolina; Kunstverein Hamburg; and Dundee Contemporary Arts, Scotland. His work is also in the public collection of the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, CA and the Sammlung Zeitgenössischer Kunst der Bundesrepublik in Bonn, Germany.
