Historical Context of United Kingdom
The United Kingdom has been an important centre for artistic production for centuries. While it accrued tremendous wealth through colonisation and the ascent of its Empire, it was also exposed to the cultural influences of other countries and continents. Throughout the modern period, Britain had been significantly eclipsed by the status of its European neighbours on one side, and of the United States on the other. But towards the end of the nineteenth century, Britain became an important focal point in the development of the avant-garde. This includes the Arts and Crafts Movement, a cutting-edge movement setting the tone for artist-led organisations, associations and organisational co-operative types that would later become into a template of sorts for bohemian artists movements of the Twentieth Century. Ground-breaking artistic movements in British modernism include for example Vorticism, involving artists related to the Bloomsbury group. Some noteworthy British artists of the modern and contemporary era include Stanley Spencer, Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, Leon Kossoff, Frank Auerbach, David Hockney, Bridget Riley, Paula Rego - and in more recent years the YBA generation led by Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin, Marc Quinn, Chris Ofili and others.
Further Biographical Context for Derek Boshier
Derek Boshier was born in 1937 and was primarily influenced creatively by the 1950s. Abstract Expressionism, a form of painting that explored ideas of spirituality and the sublime, dominated the 1950s. A number of artists focused on the formal properties of painting, and action painting took inspiration from the political freedom of the United States, as opposed to the strict strictures of the Soviet bloc. Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Frank Kline, Barnett Newman, Clyfford Still and Adolph Gottlieb were influential artists of this period. The male dominated environment has been subsequently revised to acknowledge the contributions of female artists such as Lee Krasner, Joan Mitchell, and Louise Bourgeois, amongst others.
