Already a painter, David Maesstarted working at the Lacourrière-Frélaut engraving workshop upon his arrival in Paris in 1987. In 1990 he was granted a scholarship by the Quebec Ministry of Cultural Affaire and was awarded the jury Prize from Space Group of Korea in Seoul and a mention at the Prix Lacourière in Paris.
In 1991 he received the Fondation Grav'x Price and got a residency at Casa de Velasquez in Madrid in 1992 and stayed in South until 1994. He was also awarded by a Honour mention in Madrid during the National Prize for engraving.
The following year, in 1994, he received the Jury Prize of the Third World Triennial of Prints of Chamalières. He returned that year to the Paris region and settled a few years later near Nîmes. David Maes is in the Air Canada Collection (Montreal), Picasso Museum (Antibes), National Library of France, Calcografia Nacional (Madrid), Quebec Museum (Quebec), City of Montreuil, National Library of Ottawa, National Library of Canada Quebec.
