In Christian Lemmerz’s view, art has to be confrontational to be effective. His work often confronts the gaze, evoking and inverting philosophical questions around illness and death, whether it is sculpture, installation or photography, or increasingly performance, film, and video. Nothing is taboo for Lemmerz, who does not shy away from topics like the Holocaust or terrorism.
Born in 1959 in Karlsruhe, Germany, Lemmerz studied at The Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara, Italy, between 1978 and 1982 and subsequently continued training at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Denmark from 1982-1986. In addition to his contributions to groups such as “Performancegruppen Værst” from 1985, Lemmerz has also enjoyed ample exhibition opportunities for his work in international locations. Recent solo showcased include "Limbo", at the Hans Alf Gallery in Copenhagen, Denmark (2015); "Virtual Reality Art"at Faurschou Beijing in China (2017); and "Reality Virtual Reality" at the Museum der bildenden Künste in Leipzig, Germany (2018).
