Born in 1892, Chen Guofu's creative work was largely influenced by the 1900s and 1910s. The first decades of the 20th century were defined by the dynamic development of visual and pictorial art. These years were an era of experimentation, with artists delving into ideas surrounding Post-Impressionism, Expressionism and Abstraction. These developments took hold with artist communities and collectives on an international scale, with many groups exploring different methods of communicating their ideas. In France in the early 1900s, the Nabis explored this movement, and were soon followed by German groups such as Die Brucke and Der Blaue Reiter.
