Born in 1911, Betty Curnow grew up during the 1930s and was inspired by the artistic culture of the time. Internationally this period can be best characterised by the duelling of the world’s predominant political philosophies - Marxist Socialism, Capitalist Democracy, and the Totalitarianism of both Communism and Fascism. The era assumed a sinister turn with the advent of National Socialism in Germany, and Adolf Hitler’s rise to power in 1933. The decade would culminate in the inset on the Second World War; a political and social furore that preoccupied not only artists, but large swathes of the global population.
