Bridging the gap between African and African American visual culture, Awol Erizku is a multi-disciplinary artist working primarily in photography, film, sculpture and installation. His work carries references to art history, hip hop and spirituality which manifest through his bold, abstract forms.
Awol Erizku was born in Ethiopia in 1988 and now lives and works in Los Angeles. He graduated from Cooper Union in 2010, received his MFA from the Yale School of Art in 2014 and shortly after during the same year the artist had his first solo exhibition “The Only Was is Up” at Hasted Kaeutler gallery in New York. In 2017, it was discovered that Erizku was behind the famous photographs released on Instagram of Beyoncé, first several months pregnant and later posed with her twin infant sons. Erizku has exhibited nationally and internationally at the Museum of Modern Art, Crystal Bridges Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto, among others. Broadening his work, Erizku also brings conceptuality to commercial photography highlighting cultural and creative leaders for publications such as The New Yorker, New York Magazine, GQ and Vanity Fair.
