Historical Context of United States

The United States has been key in the development of modern and contemporary art in the twentieth century, especially in the post war period, when the cultural prominence of New York assumed primacy over Paris, previously thought of as the most important art hub worldwide. Major art movements established and fostered in extensive ways throughout the United States include Abstract Expressionism in varied forms, Pop Art, including its West and East Coast variations, Minimalism, Conceptual Art, Neo-Expressionism, Graffiti and Street Art, plus various post-modern repetitions of these many types. In the modern and contemporary era, the United States has cultivated a prevailing influence over the visual culture of the World, due to the dominion of its economic and political institutions. Key examples of world renowned U.S artists of the modern and contemporary era include Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Cy Twombly, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Frank Stella, Donald Judd, Cindy Sherman, Barbara Kruger, Julian Schnabel, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring.

Further Biographical Context for August Vollbrecht

Born in 1988, August Vollbrecht grew up during the 1990s and was inspired by the artistic culture of the time. A group of artists working in the United Kingdom, who came to be known as the YBAs, or Young British Artists, defined the artistic culture of the 1990s. Affiliated loosely by their age and nationality, they were a varied group of practitioners. A number of the YBAs attended the Royal College of Art and Goldsmiths in London, and were favoured by the ‘super collector’ of the time, Charles Saatchi. The most famous member of the group is Damien Hirst, and other members included Chris Ofili, Tracey Emin, Marc Quinn, Gavin Turk, Sarah Lucas and Sam Taylor-Johnson (née Sam Taylor-Wood). The YBAs became famous for their use of shock tactics and sensationalism, alongside their use of throwaway materials, wild lifestyles and an outlook that was defiant yet commercial. Due to the large amount of media coverage that they garnered, they dominated British art during the 1990s, and their work was epitomised in the group show ‘Sensation’. The art world was influenced by many trends throughout the decade, and was characterised by the derisive sculpture of Maurizio Cattelan, and sensitive, conceptual advancements as presented in the work of artists such as Felix Gonzalez-Torres.
